For our conference this year, we invite panelists to join us in all things scandalous! As a structure, scandal mediates between the public and private, between people and institutions, and between events present, past, and future. Scandals, as we know, can make or break things in their wake, and our interest this year is exploring the idea in all its facets. We encourage a creative and expansive approach to this theme, and are excited to see papers taking on everything from public outrage, gossip, heresy, and the downfalls of figures public or private.
Papers might consider de casibus narratives, threats of excommunication, exile, or ostracization. These moments of scandal could be well-deserved and justified, or the result of malice, misunderstanding, or mischief. Panels might take on the removal of figures from public office, questions of sovereignty, or righteous resistance to such offenses. Questions around gender, nationality, religion, or other forms of identity are welcome, as are papers from across the study of the medieval world.
We encourage scholars from across all disciplines and geographical regions, and we are also keen to include as many emerging voices in the field as part of our conversation.
